The inaugural meeting of Child Care Now – Nova Scotia on June 12, 2021 was a resounding success attracting parents, early childhood educators, social justice activists, union members and others.
Morna Ballantyne, Child Care Now’s Executive Director, spoke about the current opportunities for building a universal child care system in Nova Scotia and across Canada. Sharon Gregson, spokesperson for BC’s $10/day Campaign, shared important lessons learned in her province about how to build a powerful and effective movement for universally accessible, affordable and inclusive child care.
The founding meeting established a steering committee that got right to work. The following week, the new Child Care Now chapter hosted a webinar on the caring economy featuring economist Angella MacEwen and spoken word artist El Jones.
